NEET 2017 Counselling: In
a major blow to the E Palaniswami government in Tamil Nadu, the Supreme
Court today gave its verdict on the use of NEET for admission in the
state. According to news agency ANI, the apex court said that the
medical colleges in Tamil Nadu will have to use the National Eligibility
cum Entrance Test (NEET) as the only basis for admissions. The Supreme
Court of India has asked the Tamil Nadu government to start counselling
immediately and then finish it by September 4.
According to Indian Express, the Tamil Nadu government has been against
the implementation of NEET for admission to medical colleges as they
believe that the common medical examination favours students from the
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) over other state board. They
also believe that this way students belonging to the rural parts and
weaker sections would lose seats in the medical colleges. In the past,
the state government has sent the ordinance to get an exemption from
NEET twice. The ordinance was cleared by both the law and the Human
Resource Development ministries. However, when it came to the health
ministry, it was referred back to the attorney general KK Venugopal with
some additional facts and past judgements of the apex court on the
issue, according to Indian Express. The attorney general while putting
forward his view about the exemption of Tamil Nadu students from NEET
said that the ordinance is not good in law.
According to the report, the TN government has asked the Medical Council
of India (MCI) to sanction 2,700 more medical seats in the state in
order to allay concerns of the Supreme Court about the fate of students
from the state who have already cleared NEET. The exam was made
mandatory last year for admission in medical and dental colleges across
India.
