The setting up of South Asian Postal Union was engaging the attention of South Asian countries for last few years. In the SAARC Summit held at Maldives in November 2011 it was decided to set up South Asian Postal Union.

In
furtherance Government of India has set up the Ad Hoc Secretariat in July 2012.
The Secretariat will be working on finalising the Draft Constitution and
General Regulations for the South Asian Postal Union, developing the structure
of a permanent secretariat, coordinating with the Postal Administrations of the
SAARC Countries, the SAARC Secretariat, the UPU and other stakeholders.
