Women
and Child Development and Minority Affairs Minister Smriti Irani opened her
Mahila Samman Savings Certificate (MSSC) account by visiting the Head Post
Office at Sansad Marg in New Delhi today. She came to the counter as a common
post office customer and waited for her turn to complete the account opening
formalities. Her MSSC account was opened and a computer-generated passbook was
handed over to her. On this occasion, the Minister also interacted with post
office staff and some of the MSSC and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana account holders.
Later talking to media persons, Ms Irani said that Mahila Samman Savings
Certificate sponsored by the Department of Posts is a unique initiative in the
direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of women empowerment. She
also urged all women to get the benefits of this scheme.
AIR Correspondent reports that the Mahila Samman Savings Certificate Scheme was
announced in the 2023- 24 Union Budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
to commemorate ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.’ This scheme is a significant step
towards financial inclusion and empowerment of women including girls. The
two-year tenure scheme offers an attractive and fixed interest of 7.5 percent
interest compounded quarterly with flexible investment and partial withdrawal
options with a maximum ceiling of two lakh rupees. The scheme is valid for a
two-year period up to 31st March 2025. The scheme has been made available in all
1.59 lakh post offices from 1st of this month
