Margao:
Department of Posts’ heritage building in Margao which houses the post office
will be renovated and expanded for which views of expert architects in the town
will be considered, Postmaster General (PMG) Vinodh Kumar Sharma disclosed on
Monday.
Sharma
was in Margao to take part in the inauguration of first ATM installed by India
Post in the state.
The
ATM was inaugurated at the hands of South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar in the
presence of Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
After
the inauguration programme, Sharma said that the heritage look of the building
will be maintained and the estimated cost of the work is Rs 30 lakh.
He
also said that the Margao Municipal Council chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudesai
has assured to provide services of some architects.
He
said that his top priority is to improve postal services and also to improve
the condition of buildings of postal department, which house the post offices
in the state.
He
said that three more ATMs will be installed in the state one each in Panaji,
Mapusa and Ponda.
Sharma
also assured to depute adequate manpower at the post offices and claimed that
he has authorised Sr. Superintendent of Post Offices Archana Gopinanath to work on
providing manpower to post offices on case-to-case basis.
He
said that India Post will charge Rs 500 for ATM card.
He
said that it is a myth that people are shunning use of postal services due to
improvement in internet facilities.
South
Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar said that postmen have played an important role in the
country’s progress and due to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts, there
will be noticeable improvement in the postal services.
Sawaikar
also disclosed that the Fatorda post office will soon be shifted to the PWD
building.
Margao
MLA Digambar Kamat said that ATM services are essential as they allow people to
travel without cash on them and thereby saves them from being robbed.
