Cabinet raises floor of annual income for creamy lay

Cabinet raises floor of annual income for creamy layer

More people from the other backward classes (OBCs) would be able to get reservations in government jobs and admission to central education institutions as the Cabinet today approved raising of a floor for creamy layer from over Rs 4.5 lakh per annum income to over Rs 6 lakh a year.

However, the OBC lobby within the Congress had demanded raising of the floor further.

The decision means that members of OBCs earning over Rs 6 lakh annually will not be eligible for reservations in jobs and education.

An official statement said the increase in the income limit to exclude the creamy layer is in keeping with the increase in the Consumer Price Index.

However, the increase may not satisfy the OBC lobby within the Congress that had blocked the proposal for fixing creamy layer at Rs 6 lakh in the Cabinet earlier.
